British Standards Institution (BSI) and AccountAbility (AA) cordially held the ‘Sustainability – AA1000 Assurance Standard 2008 Launch’ on 4th - 5th December 2008. The launch consisted of an evening cocktail event and a day of workshop.
The evening event provided a relaxing environment for key players in this field in Hong Kong to meet and exchange ideas and plans. It followed by a full day workshop where participants have learnt about the BS 8900 framework for organization to develop sustainability management system and the principles of sustainability reporting per the new AA1000 Assurance Standard. These standards are expected to set the reporting and assurance practice benchmark for the next 4-6 years.
We believe “sustainability” is more important than ever at this juncture, to rebuild real and lasting trust in our social and commercial fabric, given this continuous chain of crises we are facing. The transparent reporting of sustainability or CSR performance provides an organization with credibility in the eyes of investors, customers, employees, the media and society at large.
Over 50 participants form sectors of government, utility, non-profit organizations, engineering and project management consultancy, aeronautical engineering, construction and property management were at the launch.

To further promote sustainable development, BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION held the Sustainable Development seminar on 23 Mar 2009.
This seminar provided an overview of sustainable development management based on British Standard BS 8900. Our Technical Manager, Sustainability, Mr Terence Cheng, has addressed how this approach helps an organization make high quality decisions that promote continuing and lasting success.
Society at large is demanding more of both public and private sector organizations to be responsible, especially in light of the financial turmoil. The continuing and long-term success of any organization will increasingly depend on how the organizations respond to these expectations. In view of this, the concept of sustainable development is developed to provide a framework for responding to a significant number of these expectations. BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION is very keen to share our expertise in this area and work with all parties that share the common vision and to fulfill BSI’s mission “Raising Standards Worldwide”
